BUILDING AN ALTAR TO Jehovah

By: Karina C Quinn

Hebrews 13:8-10

8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods, which is of no benefit to those who do so. 10We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat.

The Significance of Altar Building and Dedication

People in every culture and society of the world seem to commemorate particular events in very special means and ways. In some cultures, feasts and festivities are included for every occasion. In others, sacrifices are normal markings of special days on the calendar. Some people also use gifts to mark a particular event. While others gather and sing praises of worship. All different groups and cultures create and build different monuments and markers. Some will parade around in new garments, while others will wear torn garments and rags for days. No matter what, we all have a deep and distinct desire within our souls to commemorate the significant events of our lives by traditions and ceremonies. The Hebrew Scriptures shows us that Jehovah’s people commemorated the most significant occurrences of their lives in a most particular way.

Scripture shows us and records that they did so by building an altar to Jehovah.

  1. Noah built an altar when he walked onto dry land following the great flood.

  1. Abraham built an altar when he arrived in the land in which Jehovah had sent him. (The altar of sacrifice in which he was prepared to lay his son, Isaac upon).

  1. Isaac, too, built an altar

  1. Moses raised an altar to Jehovah and called it “Jehovah-Nissi” (The Lord Our Banner) to celebrate and honor a military victory!

  1. Gideon, when he was preparing to do battle, built and altar;

  1. And David, he built and altar on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
