FROM CHAOS to CALM - Chic Cottage Living Room Organization

What a great day yesterday was. I had been busy being bummed (depressed) about the clutter of the house...don't we all? Summer was here and all went helter-skelter. Well, with the children back in school, fall in the Air, and me being at home; it was time for me to take the bull by the horns.

After all our homes are supposed to be our 'sanctuary?' In other words, our "Safe Haven."

The home is the one place where we all (as a family) can relax after a long, hectic day. But if we are met with clutter every time we enter a room, I know from personal experience, you will never feel a sense of peace and serenity. It is my hope that these boosting organizational tips can help put the "peace" back into your home.

So I started my Homemaking Day 1 with walking through each room and organizing them on a list as to where to start. I chose to start with the living room. The one place in which everyone enters everyday.

I was almost overwhelmed because it had become a "rec room" instead of my peaceful, restful living room. Therefore, this was where I needed to dig in. Work clothes on and kids off to school here we go!

Living Room Step 1

  • In your mind, figure out what you want from this room. For example: with mine I wanted it to be cheery, peaceful and clean. Not sterile, but tidy. I do not have a TV in this room, in which I am thankful. We have all called it our "conversation room." A place where we greet friends and family to catch up on old times, and also a place where everyone gets a first impression of who we are as a family.

Start by:

• Moving all the furniture to the middle of the room.

• Get the vacuum out. Vacuum the outer part of the room.

• Then start reorganizing the furniture...give it a fresh new look by changing furniture positions around.

• If you have a bookcase that usually collects all...get that in order. Only display the things you cherish and use.

• Get an old square, deep basket (or bin) and place all the children books in it and set it alongside a chair. This will not only help clutter, but encourage reading as well.

• Now that you have the room the way you're like it with the furniture moved, vacuum the inside...lay down a new throw rug for a fresh look or just leave the open space.

• Oh, and the most important thing of all.....add splashes of your colors and candles to make this room warm and soft!

Sit back, with a warm cup of tea and just admire your handiwork before everyone gets home.

Happy Organizing
